I’m in a poetry team. We’re going to Texas. Competitive poetry (and fun).
If you read my bio on the ‘about’ page, you may notice I am in a Toronto spoken word slam poetry team, namely BAM! Youth Slam.
This July’s Brave New Voices Festival in Houston, Texas, USA, brings poetry teams across the globe into a week long festival of workshops, fun, and of course competitive slams. My first out of country event.
Explanation of event:
Spoken word is a style of poetic storytelling. Slams are spoken word competitions that have time limits and scores.
Teams send out individual or team poems to be scored by 5 random audience judges on a scale of 1-10. After a number of poems by different teams, the team with the highest scores advance to the next round, and so on, until there’s a first place and all scores are ranked.
There’s also lots of meeting people, shaking hands, and making good memories, or so I’m told. But there will be powerfully resonating mind blowing works of art.
I will do my best to keep everyone who follows my social media up to date with the happenings of the festival, and a log of daily events.
The plan now is to hop on a plane around July 16th, and return to Toronto July 21st (with first place).
